Legislation will be brought forward to allow small and medium sized businesses to reclaim any SSP paid for sickness due to COVID-19. Eligibility is as follows:
The refund will cover up to two weeks SSP per eligible employee who has been off work because of COVID-19. Please note this does not apply to SSP that doesn't relate to the Coronavirus
Employers with fewer than 250 employees will be eligible. Employee's start dates must also be before the 28th February 2020 in order to be eligible
Employers will be able to reclaim expenditure for any employee who has claimed SSP as a result of COVID-19
Employers should maintain records of absences where SSP has been paid but employees don't need to provide a fit note in order to receive those payments
The repayment scheme will be set up as soon as possible and we will update employers as soon as we can on this
Employees have a day one right of SSP related to COVID-19 and therefore don't need to wait 3 waiting days before sick pay commences. If an employee self isolates as a precaution, self isolates because they either have the virus or have symptoms or they live with someone at risk and have to self isolate, they are eligible to receive SSP in all cases.
